This WHS, located in the department of Copan, was founded back in 1500s BCE, had its golden era – and major construction period – in 300 – 900 CE, was abandoned in the 10th century CE, re-discovered in 1570 by Diego Garcia de Palacio, and evacuated in the 19th century. It is one of the most important ruins sites of the Mayan civilization, evidence of it being an important Mayan political, civic, and religious centre in the region.
