Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor

Located in Shaanxi province, this mausoleum is the tomb of Qinshihuang (death in 210 BCE), the first monarch to unify China. Construction began in 246 BCE, with the layout of the grave complex, which lies below a gigantic mound, designed to mirror the urban plan of the then-capital, Xianyang. The burial pits are filled with terracotta warriors, every single one of whom look different, with their terracotta horses, bronze chariots, and bronze weapons. The re-discovery of the mausoleum only happened in 1974 CE. To date, not all the burial chambers have been examined, with less than one-third of the estimated 600 pits having been excavated.

Changdeokgung Palace Complex

The palace dates back to the early 15th century CE and was built on the orders of King Taejong of the Joseon Dynasty (1392CE – 1910CE) of Korea. It was designed to consist of a number of official and residential buildings set against the topographical features of the area, aligned to pungsu (traditional Korean geomancy) principles. Noteworthy too is the inclusion of an expansive garden – the Biwon, or Secret Garden – as part of the palace grounds. Originally a secondary palace, Changdeokgung became the seat of Joseon political power following its rebuilding after a Japanese invasion in the 16th century destroyed the Korean palaces and thence, became influential of Korean architecture, landscaping, and arts.

Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns

The Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns consists of three closely related ancient towns: Sukhothai, Si Satchanalai, and Kamphaeng Phet. The first two are in Sukhothai province while the third is located in Kamphaeng Phet province. Sukhothai was the capital of the first Kingdom of Siam, which existed in the 13th and 14th century CE, while Si Satchanalai was its spiritual centre. Kaemphaeng Phet, located at the kingdom’s southern border, was an important frontier city. The large number of monuments, buildings and temples, and architectural designs found here are distinctly Buddhist and represent the beginning of Thai architecture and art, known as the “Sukhothai style”.

Cultural Landscape of Bali Province: the Subak System as a Manifestation of the Tri Hita Karana Philosophy

This cultural landscape is composed of rice farmlands on both flat land and terraces, their water irrigation management systems, as well as the relevant, associated water temples that are found on the island-province of Bali. This social system is known as subak and it dates back to the 9th century CE. It is based on a Balinese religious-philosophical concept, the Tri Hita Karana, which harmonises the realms of the spirit, the human world, and nature.

Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex

The Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex is composed of five near-contiguous protected areas - Khao Yai National Park, Thap Lan National Park, Pang Sida National Park, Ta Phraya National Park, and Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary - spread across the provinces of Saraburi, Nakhon Nayok, Nakhon Rachisima, Prachinburi, Srakaew, and Burirum. The area is home to more than 800 species of fauna, including a number of endangered ones.
