Timbuktu WHS is located in the region of Timbouctou. It was an important economic centre for trading as well as the intellectual and spiritual capital of Islam in Africa during the 15th and 16th centuries CE. The three masjid (mosques) and madrassah (Islamic schools) that recall Timbuktu’s golden age – Djingareyber (built in 1570CE – 1583CE), Sankore (built in 1578CE – 1582CE), and Sidi Yahia (built in 1400CE, and restored in 1577CE – 1578CE), – are located here. Standing alongside them are sixteen mausoleums and holy public places also listed in the WHS, all of which are testament to the exceptional earthen architecture style of the region.

The Thang Long Imperial Citadel is located in the municipality of Hanoi. It dates back to the 11th century CE, and was constructed by the Ly Viet Dynasty upon independence of the Dai Viet; the site was originally occupied by a Chinese fortress which was first established in the 7th century. Since then, the citadel has been the centre of political power in the region, a representation of a unique Southeast Asian culture specific to the Red River valley, with influences from China and the Kingdom of Champa. The WHS, consisting of the Central Sector of the citadel, is the best-preserved part of the complex.

The WHS of the Citadel of the Ho Dynasty can be seen in Thanh Hoa province. Built in 1397 according to feng shui (Chinese geomancy) principles, it is testament to the historical influence of Confucianism in Vietnam. The complex is an example of a new form of Southeast Asian imperial cities: the adaptation of geomantic principles in a landscape of natural beauty, showing both Confucian and Buddhist philosophical and cultural influences.

Mountain Resort and its Outlying Temples, Chengde

country. China
year of inscription. 1994
criteria. Cultural
This WHS, located in Liaoning province, is a vast imperial complex of palaces, buildings and temples set amongst a landscape composed of lakes, pastureland, and forests. It includes the Mountain Resort, built between 1703 CE and 1792 CE, which served as the summer palace of the Qing Dynasty. The site was chosen as it was near an imperial hunting ground, and it was set in traditional Chinese garden landscaping, which balances human aesthetics, feng shui (Chinese geomancy) principles, and the natural setting. It was here that many historical events during the Qing Dynasty took place. Around the palace complex are twelve outlying temples, some of which were built in the traditional style of ethnic minority groups and featuring a blend of Han, Mongolian, and Tibetan architectural styles. As the sites where Qing monarchs met with leaders of ethnic minority groups and with foreign emissaries, they are witness to how the Qing Dynasty managed cross-cultural relations within and outside of the country.
