Located in Ninh Binh province, the Trang An Landscape Complex is a mixed cultural and natural World Heritage Site. It is composed of three protected areas: the Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, the Trang An-Tam Coc-Bich Dong Scenic Landscape, and the Hoa Lu Special-Use Forest. As a nature site, this region is dominated by a spectacular landscape of limestone karst peaks, with accompanying valleys, and caves and subterranean waterways. Historically, the ancient capital of Viet Nam, Hoa Lu, was established here in the 10th and 11th century CE. Monuments include temples and pagodas, tombs, and grottos and caves, set amidst small villages and padi fields.
