Old City of Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is in the county of Dubrovnik-Neretva, on the Dalmatian coast. Dubbed the “Pearl of the Adriatic”, the port-city arose in importance from the 13th century CE onwards. Despite damage from a massive earthquake in 1667CE and armed conflict in the 1990s, Dubrovnik has managed to preserve its old city, with its Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture.

The WHS site was listed in 1979 under Yugoslavia. With its independence in 1991, the State Party was then re-defined as Croatia.

Göbekli Tepe

The Göbekli Tepe WHS is located in the province of Sanliurfa. This ruins consists of megalithic monuments which are round-oval and rectangular in shape. It was believed that they were erected by hunter-gather societies in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic Age, between 9,600 and 8,200BCE, in Upper Mesopotamia. They were likely to have been used for religious ritualistic purposes, probably related to funerary practices. Images of humans and animals are carved into the pillars. Recent archaeological evidence have revealed remains of buildings that are likely to be been for domestic use.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park WHS is located across the states of North Carolina and Tennessee. Home to large areas of undisturbed temperate forests, it boasts of a large biodiversity of flora and fauna species.

Mesa Verde National Park

The Mesa Verde National Park is a WHS in the state of Colorado, which has a large number of prehistoric, ancestral Pueblo Indian dwellings, built between the 6th and 12th century CE, on a site with an altitude of more than 2,600m. These dwellings include cliff dwellings that range in size from small storage sites to large villages of more than 100 rooms. Other archaeological findings, representing both settlements of other manners of construction and non-habitation sites, have also been discovered.

Krzemionki Prehistoric Striped Flint Mining Region

This WHS is located in the voivodeship (province) of Swietokrzyskie. It comprises four mining sites that date back from the Neolithic Age to the Early Bronze Age, a period from 3900BCE to 1600BCE. Underground structures for extracting stripped flint, used mainly for axe-making, and workshops for processing the flints bear evidence of a comprehensive flint production site, whose output was distributed as far as 650km away.

The four component sites are:
  • The principal mining site, Krzemionki Opatowskie Mining Field
  • Two smaller mining fields: Borownia and Korycizna
  • Gawroniec prehistoric miners’ permanent settlement and site for finishing and polishing the flint axes

Historic Quarter of the City of Colonia del Sacramento

The city of Colonia del Sacramento on the Plata River was founded by the Portuguese in 1680. It was disputed between the Portuguese and Spanish for more than a century, before finally being conquered by the Spanish. The WHS preserves its historical cityscape which reflects a fusion of Portuguese, Spanish, and  post-colonial architectural forms.
