The city of Colonia del Sacramento on the Plata River was
founded by the Portuguese in 1680. It was disputed between the Portuguese and
Spanish for more than a century, before finally being conquered by the Spanish.
The WHS preserves its historical cityscape which reflects a fusion of Portuguese,
Spanish, and post-colonial architectural
forms.
