This WHS is located in the voivodeship (province) of Swietokrzyskie. It comprises four mining sites that date back from the Neolithic Age to the Early Bronze Age, a period from 3900BCE to 1600BCE. Underground structures for extracting stripped flint, used mainly for axe-making, and workshops for processing the flints bear evidence of a comprehensive flint production site, whose output was distributed as far as 650km away.
The four component sites are:
- The principal mining site, Krzemionki Opatowskie Mining Field
- Two smaller mining fields: Borownia and Korycizna
- Gawroniec prehistoric miners’ permanent settlement and site for finishing and polishing the flint axes
