The Thang Long Imperial Citadel is located in the municipality of Hanoi. It dates back to the 11th century CE, and was constructed by the Ly Viet Dynasty upon independence of the Dai Viet; the site was originally occupied by a Chinese fortress which was first established in the 7th century. Since then, the citadel has been the centre of political power in the region, a representation of a unique Southeast Asian culture specific to the Red River valley, with influences from China and the Kingdom of Champa. The WHS, consisting of the Central Sector of the citadel, is the best-preserved part of the complex.
