The island of Itsukushima in the prefecture of Hiroshima has been regarded as a holy place of Shintoism since recorded history of the religion began. The first religious buildings constructed here dates back to the 6th century CE, while the current buildings were took their form from those built from the 12th century CE. The shrine is a prime example of the Japanese concept of scenic beauty, by combining human creativity in colour and form against a natural setting of mountains (in the background) and sea (in the foreground).
