Lübeck is a city in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. It was one of the principal cities and a former capital of the Hanseatic League. First founded in the 12th century CE, it prospered until the 16th century CE as a major trading centre in northern Europe, a role that it continues to undertake even today. Despite significant damage during World War II (1939 – 45), the old city retains much of its 15th- and 16th-century churches, buildings, and monuments.
