Van Nellefabriek is a complex of factories built in the 1920s in the province of South Holland. The site is considered to be one of the icons of 20th-century industrial architecture, with its use of architectural features that seek to improve factory working conditions. As such, it has come to symbolise the modernist and functionalist culture in the inter-war period. It also bears witness to the historical economic role of the Netherlands, in the importing of raw materials (in this case, food products), processing them industrially, before exporting the products to the rest of Europe.
